Having got increasingly concerned about professional rugby's injury profile, in 2013, while rugby correspondent at the Mail on Sunday, Sam convinced his bosses to launch the concussion in rugby campaign, which has since been described as the 'most influential sports campaign in newspaper history' 

In 2023 Sam published Concussed: Sport's Uncomfortable Truth, which has since been shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and won the UK Sports Book Award for Outstanding Sports Writing
