Concussed poses the questions all sports lovers need answering as evidence continues to build, linking sports-related concussions to premature deaths and dementia.

Hosted by world-renowned investigative journalist, author and concussion campaigner Sam Peters, this event featured a panel discussion with England's World Cup winning hooker Steve Thompson MBE, former Welsh international and TV pundit, Philippa Tuttiett and world-leading brain injury expert Professor Willie Stewart. There will also be a special guest appearance from two-time Olivier-winning actor, playwright and passionate sports lover Rory Kinnear.

Kicking off with drinks, canapés and networking, the evening featured a panel discussion, followed by extensive Q&A from the floor. We actively encourage everyone to join the debate.

  • Sam Peters

    Sam Peters

    AUTHOR & JOURNALIST

    An award-winning journalist and media campaigner with 19 years' experience working across national newspapers, Sam spearheaded The Mail on Sunday's acclaimed concussion campaign, shortlisted for the Cudlipp Prize in 2014.

    In the same year, Sam was shortlisted as sports journalist of the year at the Press Gazette Awards and named one of Rugby World's five most influential media figures.

    From 2014 to 2017, Sam was rugby correspondent at The Mail on Sunday, during which time he was twice shortlisted as rugby journalist of the Year and investigative reporter of the Year at the Sports Journalists Awards.

  • Steve Thompson MBE

    Steve Thompson MBE

    WORLD CUP WINNER

    Steve Thompson MBE is a former Rugby Union player and 2003 Rugby World Cup winner. Once England’s most capped hooker, Thompson has also played for the British & Irish Lions as well as playing almost 200 matches for the Northampton Saints.

    The legacy of Steve’s life in rugby should be a host of treasured memories. Instead, it is one of trying to recall the names of his wife and four young children. Being lost in a street he has walked down a hundred times. Steve has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, the result of endless collisions, concussions, and injuries. He is now campaigning to improve the game and safeguard those who play it.

  • Philippa Tuttiett

    WELSH RUGBY INTERNATIONAL

    Philippa is the face of Welsh Women’s rugby and since her playing retirement, she has become a fan favourite in the commentary box and one of the most respected female pundits in the world.

    Before retiring from international rugby in 2018, the winger represented Wales in Seven Six Nations championships and at the 2014 Rugby World Cup in France. She was also captain of the Cardiff Blues.

    On hanging up her rugby boots, Philippa’s passion and expertise for rugby continues now as a media professional. She was one of the first former female players to commentate on men’s international rugby, and is now a regular working for the BBC, Premier Sports, Sky Sports, ITV and the BBC on Rugby World Cups, the Six Nations, Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship.

  • Rory Kinnear

    ACTOR & PLAYWRIGHT

    Rory Kinnear is an English actor and playwright who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. In 2014, he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Shakespeare's villain Iago in the National Theatre production of Othello.

    He is known for playing Bill Tanner in the James Bond films Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre, and in various video games of the franchise. He is the youngest actor to play the role of Bill Tanner. He also won a Laurence Olivier Award for portraying Sir Fopling Flutter in a 2008 version of The Man of Mode by George Etherege, and a British Independent Film Award for his performance in the 2012 film Broken.

    CONSULTANT NEUROPATHOLOGIST

    Professor Willie Stewart is a consultant neuropathologist at the University of Glasgow and a leading expert in brain injury in sport.

    He published the famous FIELD study in 2019, which demonstrated that professional footballers are 5 times more likely to suffer from dementia than the normal population. His influential work has triggered football authorities across the world to listen to these serious health risks and his ongoing work has ignited change.
